(CMR) A formal complaint has been made against the police to the Ombudsman's Office; after critics say their slow response time was a factor in a Security Centre guard being hospitalized in the ICU on Sunday evening.
CMR first reported the incident on Monday after police confirmed reports that a guard was indeed run over by rouge youngsters. We had received independent reports beforehand that the guards received serious injuries with one being knocked unconscious by a rock and the other being run over by a car.
After the matter was posted on our Facebook page; it emerged that the police may not have responded in a timely fashion. One poster complained that their delay was the cause of the one guard being run over and almost killed.
The poster provided additional details on the incident which varied considerably from what the police had indicated in their press release. They shared that the altercation is alleged to have happened after the property manager made the youngers leave the pool.
They then started vandalizing the boats at the adjoining Scott's Marina. This aligns closely with what our sources told us earlier as well. We also understand that they may have demanded keys to some of the boats on the property.
Initially, there was a single guard on the property who attempted to contain the situation. It is alleged that 911 was called at 2010 hours and “the police failed to respond”.
That guard then called his supervisor who came with another officer for reinforcement. The youngsters started throwing rocks at that stage and police were called again – still no response.
The four boys then left the property and returned shortly with two more boys along with “machetes and sticks”. They proceded to attack the guards again. At this point, the third security guard was run over. He was left under the vehicle in critical condition. We understand the supervisor was knocked out cold by one of the rocks.
The initial guard hid in a nearby shed until help eventually arrived. It was during this final assault that the police were called for the third time and finally responded. The poster noted that this was an entire hour after the first call was placed to 911.
The police have told other media that they have started their own internal review into the matter. It is unclear who requested the Ombudsman review.
