(CMR) A religious leader who blamed the COVID-19 pandemic on same-sex marriage has tested positive for the virus.
91-year-old Patriarch Filaret, 91, is in hospital after he tested positive for COVID-19 during routine testing.
“We inform that during planned testing, His Holiness Patriarch Filaret of Kyiv and All Rus-Ukraine tested positive for COVID-19,” read a Facebook post put out on Filaret's page.
“Now His Holiness Patriarch is undergoing treatment at a hospital. The Patriarch's state of health is satisfactory,” added the post.
Filaret late last month in a interview caught the ire of Ukrainian human rights groups when he linked the coronavirus to gay marriage.
One local Ukrainian LGBT+ rights group following the interview announced it would sue the high-profile Christian leader for promoting hatred.
The church fired back noting that it would bring a legal suit of its own against entities which sought to encroach on traditional family values.
Same-sex unions are not legally permissible in Ukraine.
