(CMR) Long serving Senior Police Constable (SPC), Mark Luke, a marine officer with the RCIPS has lost has battle to cancer earlier today.
Luke was a strong presence and social media inspiration who shared much of his battle since being diagnosed in November 2014 with a rare cancer at a hospital in Miami. Mark was given a 5% chance of surviving for 2 years but being the survivor that he was far exceeded that.
He was also often applauded on his Facebook page for his love of photography and sharing some beautiful landscape shots including many Cayman sunsets and nature scenes. He once said he loved photographing sunsets because
“no two are the same”
He published a book of his work and had some for sale at the Cayman Islands Cancer Society.
He just celebrated his 48th birthday in July.
He was a Rescue Swimmer and a bright star in RCIPS’ Marine Unit according to the Deputy Governor when he was chosen as the Employee of the Month for May 2013. He said:
“his superiors say, he provides unbiased service, without favour, prejudice or discrimination, and demonstrates by his daily actions the principle that justice must be evenly distributed.”
Among his duties SPC Luke was in charge of inspecting and purchasing safety equipment for the marine unit, and he is ever mindful of Government getting full value for money spent.
At the award presentation, the Deputy Governor thanked him
“for demonstrating such a remarkable level of performance and commitment to the Government and people of the Cayman Islands, and for your selfless and dedicated service.”
He is survived by his wife and children. More information will be posted once available.
CMR wishes to extend our condolences to his family and friends.
