Mel Espiritu Estabillo (57) Filipino national and long time Cayman resident succumbed to his injuries after a water related incident while swimming with friends on Sunday afternoon.
The Filipino community is in mourning today after hearing of the sad news that one of their own has died after enjoying an afternoon outing with some friends.
Reports are that around 1:45 pm police and other emergency services were dispatched by 9-1-1 Communication Centre to a report of a water-related incident near Breakers, in Bodden Town.
A group of males were on two separate vessels, about 200 yards from shore. One of the males encountered difficulties whilst swimming and was unable to get back onto the vessel. He was assisted onto shore by the others.
Officers from the Joint Marine Unit located the vessel which had drifted ashore some distance from the incident.
CPR was performed on the man by a member of the public until EMS, the Joint Marine Unit and Uniform Officers arrived.
Sources indicate that Estabillo worked at a local quarry in Bodden Town and has three children and a wife back in the Philippines. He previously worked at the Lions Centre as the Crew Chief.
The matter is under investigation by the police.
