(CMR) Did you know that in the Second World War, over two-thirds of the male Caymanian population were involved in the war effort, a greater percentage than any other allied country?
During the First and Second World Wars, many Caymanians signed up to fight in the armed forces. However, many more joined the British Merchant Navy. During the First World War, many Caymanians used their skill as sailors to serve in the Merchant Navy.
The Merchant Navy was responsible for carrying vital supplies by sea to help soldiers fighting the war and also provided essential goods for people living on the Home Front. Although these men did not fight, that did not make their job any less dangerous.
Many Caymanians have also served in the American military.
Many Caymanians joined the Trinidad Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve in the Second World War and patrolled the Caribbean, or again served in the Merchant Navy.
As a small island nation, Caymanians depended on the sea and became skilled sailors. Caymanian seafarers became famous throughout the world during the war. The war showed the world the skill of Caymanian sailors, and, in the post-war years, many found employment with international shipping firms, bringing more money into the Islands and leading to an increased standard of living.
Today we salute our veterans. We remember those who have died, and we continue to celebrate those alive.
