(CMR) The United States Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) says the wearing of two masks could offer more protection against the coronavirus.
In its new recommendations released on Wednesday, the CDC suggests that people wear masks with layers or wear two masks for increased protection.
The new guidelines follow research from the CDC, which tested various masks in a lab setting and found evidence that combining a cloth mask with a surgical mask could reduce both the spread of the virus to others and exposure to the virus.
It was recommended that people wear one disposable mask underneath a cloth mask and that the second mask pushes the edges of the inner mask against their face.
CDC also suggested wearing a mask that fits snugly against the face to prevent air with respiratory droplets from leaking in and out around the edges of the mask. It also recommended wearing a mask with a nose wire or metal strip at the top of the mask to prevent air from leaking in or out.
People are also advised to choose a mask with layers to stop more respiratory droplets from getting inside or escaping from their mask, especially if they are sick.
The CDC advised that the KN95 mask not be combined with any other mask.
