(CMR) Cayman's eldest resident Wellesly Howell passed away last night. Howell celebrated his 106th birthday earlier this year. Howell, a former shoemaker, and saxophonist, was born on January 7, 1915, in Chesterfield, St. Mary, Jamaica.
Howell came to Cayman in 1958 after receiving an invitation from S.E. Nembhard to be part of his band. The six-month contract turned into a permanent move with Howell getting into the shoemaking business. He had his business on Shedden Road for over 42 years.
Speaking in an interview with CMR this year, Howell credits his faith in God for his long life and his special gift in music.
CMR offers condolences to the family and friends of Wellesly Howell.
