(CMR) A program that ensures the beautification and maintenance of sections of the Cayman Islands could be expanded.
Minister of Commerce, Planning and Infrastructure (CPI), Joey Hew, said his Ministry hoped to expand the National Enhancement Project (NiCE) in the future.
“We hope to expand NiCE, in the future, by working in partnership with other agencies for longer periods of time and using it as a hybrid work initiative, including elements of a second-chance, rehabilitation or an on-the-job training,” Hew said.
Hew, who braved inclement weather to undertake his National Enhancement Project (NiCE) tour on Wednesday, lauded the efforts of NiCE workers. He said,
“Seeing the quality of their work, it is clear that many NiCE workers take pride in ensuring that the community can enjoy well-maintained roadsides, parks, cemeteries and beaches.”
Hew said each year, the Ministry has tried moving the program forward with the help and support of partners, including WORC, Department of Environmental Health, National Roads Authority, Mosquito Research & Control Unit, and Public Works Department.
Wednesday's visits included two sections of George Town, Windsor Park, and the Broadwalk on South Sound Road. NiCE workers cleared roadside verges, cut bushes, and cleared fly-tipped refuse from the Windsor Park neighborhood.
Minister Hew spoke to the teams and thanked them for a job well done on behalf of his Ministry and the general public. He also asked workers about their experiences with the program.
Hew was accompanied by the Acting Director Public Works Department, Troy Whorms; the Deputy Chief Officer of Ministry of CPI, Leyda Nicholson-Makasare; and NiCE Project Manager, Lois Kellyman.
This month’s two-week NiCE initiative ends on Friday, January 22.
