(CMR) During today's COVID-19 briefing it was revealed by the Chief Medical Officer that Cayman Brac now has its first confirmed case. There were over 40 cases sent off for testing and of those 6 came back positive, and one of the six is a Brac resident. That person acquired the virus from someone who had a travel history. That person has presented with symptoms and was tested as a result.
Three of those who had a travel history and one person had no household connection so acquired it locally from elsewhere.
This brings the total number of confirmed COVID-19 cases in the Cayman Islands to 35.
With additional test kits components on the way, Dr. Lee shared that we have about 1,700 re-agents but there's a shortage of swabs.
Police Report
The Commissioner of Police said that overnight one person was arrested for indecent exposure, brief of curfew and have an offensive weapon in Grand Cayman and another person was warned for breach of curfew. So far today there were two additional persons warned for prosecution.
The hard curfew will be coming into effect this evening at 7:00 pm. Approved delivery services only can work during hard curfew. No drive-through or pickup restaurant businesses are permitted to operate during the hard curfew period.
During the hard curfew, no activity including exercising will be permitted. However, during the soft curfew hours, exercising is permitted. No marine activity is permitted meaning no swimming/activities in the water.
Premier Alden McLaughlin
The grim numbers for the USA include an increase of over 22,000 cases overnight leading the world in the number of overall increases. The Premier's brief comments today expressed his concerns about the positive test results in Cayman Brac because of the age of their population. He shared that should this virus take hold there the results will be devastating.
Governor Martyn Roper
The governor confirmed some 1,000 swabs for testing should be on the island in the coming days but stressed that globally getting these supplies are challenging.
He confirmed that everything is in place for the incoming British Airways flight on Tuesday afternoon. Anyone driving en route to the airport should have their travel documents readily available on them to show the police.
Minister Dwayne Seymour
The minister encouraged businesses to put Cayman workers first and consider closely their decisions for the long term viability of these islands.
