(CMR) Multiple parents and students have contacted CMR expressing concern that the Cayman Academy high school division has confiscated prohibited electronic items, and that students will not be getting them back before Easter break for a fine of up to $250.

In a letter sent to parents from the School's Administration on Friday, 25 March, the school said the items seized in a random bag search Friday morning would not be returned to students before 13 April, the last day of the Spring term.

Among the items seized were cell phones, ear pods, air pods, and articles of jewelry. According to the letter, some things were taken directly from students while some were found hidden behind blinds and other areas in the auditorium.

The school's administration said a fine is attached for the items to be returned. A cell phone attracts a cost of $250, and all other non-electronic gadgets such as ear pods attract a fine of $100. No fine is attached to jewelry.

The letter reminded parents that, “as was stated at the beginning of the school year, only iPads, tablets, and laptops were allowed when needed.”

The letter also reminded parents that cellphones, ear pods, AirPods and jewelry were not allowed.

The items seized have been labeled with the students' names and the date they were taken; items found hidden were labeled unknown.

“As a division, we have been advising our students to not take to school these items that were considered contraband,” the letter stated.

“Our desire is for our students to understand the need to respect the school's rules regarding cell phones to not take them to school,” it added.

One student shared, “I think this is rather unnecessary cause most of us have after-school and need to call our parents and stuff, or go to track or other cubs, so we need our devices for those purposes.”

However, in the letter, the school said it has two phones available for students to call their parents.
