(CMR) Local businessman and entrepreneur Jim Knapp (68) died yesterday morning in a water related incident after getting into difficulty in the water at Seven Mile Beach.
Shortly after 8:30 am 911 Communications received a call that a person at Seven Mile Beach was in distress. Knapp was found unresponsive and was transported to the hospital where was pronounced dead.
Knapp has pushed for the Cayman Islands to consider solar as the best energy alternative to traditional fuel. Knapp was the director of Endless Energy which is best known for installing the island's largest solar system in 2014 boasting 528 panels. He also designed the Security solar design.
He first arrived in the Cayman Islands in 1993. Formerly he served in the U.S. Air Force as a computer guidance systems instructor. He also worked under several American presidents including Bill Clinton as a delegate to the White House.
He also developed a digital imaging and voice technologies company which he sold to IBM in 1989 for US$25 million.
Knapp is survived by his wife, Judy Van Liere. However, coming from a large family of his own he opted to not have any children.
