(CMR) Speaker of the Legislative Assembly McKeeva Bush has issued a public statement this afternoon explaining and apologizing for his actions on Friday night when he attacked a Coral Beach manager – essentially claiming he does not recall the events of that evening and is relying on information from others and that he was confused and disoriented. He blames that incident on not properly dealing with the loss of his daughter who died tragically nine years ago.
He shared that he was heading home and stopped in to collect dinner to take home with him. This statement runs contrary to eyewitness accounts which placed him at the establishment drinking since at least 4:00 pm in the afternoon. He shared:
“I have been subsequently informed that I passed out and fell. I don't recall passing out and falling.”
His statement does not explain why he would have passed out but does indicate that because he's overweight “I am told I made quite an impact”.
He admits that he is told that he attacked “management and staff” who were trying to assist him but had no intentions to do so. He compares the feeling to coming out of anesthesia after surgery and that he must have reacted in this manner because of fearing he was in danger.
Sharing what he calls a very “personal matter” he further explains that he has not properly dealt with the loss of his daughter and mothers and was at their gravesites earlier that day. Admitting that he has not dealt with the situation he is now committed to getting professional help.
This explanation varies significantly from what others in his own camp had been circulating earlier in the weekend which included the fact that he was upset that the woman was a lesbian and first hit him and he was merely defending himself and that she was refusing to hire Caymanians in a business that his son is part owner of.
No politician in the Cayman Islands has yet made a public statement on the attack.
