(CMR) The elected member for Newlands, Alva Suckoo (48) has resigned as Deputy Opposition Leader and the Honourable Leader of the Opposition Mr. Ezzard Miller has accepted his resignation effective immediately.
While details are few at this stage Suckoo has promised a public meeting soon to discuss the matter further and answer any questions that his constituents may have.
Suckoo, a two term member, was a former member of the Progressives but ran as an independent in the last election. He has a reputation for speaking his mind and was suspended from the house in September 2018 which sparked a walkout by his colleagues in the opposition. Suckoo held the post as Deputy Opposition Leader since June 2017; when his current term begin.
Suckoo has made no comment on the reason for his resignation but CMR political contacts have discussed some tensions in the Opposition camp for some time and will be analyzing those at a later date. One person noted:
“Essentially it's a matter of the old guards vs. the new guards. The old ones always want to retain their power and position and are not allowing the newer members to obtain true leadership positions. There is also a very different leadership style between members. Some are top down focused and others are bottom up and the two are simply not seeing eye to eye.”
There was also some marl road discussion about the fact that Suckoo was to be in this Deputy Leader position for the first 18 months and then move into Miller's position. CMR also heard rumblings that the recent talks about the possible formation of a new political grouping from the opposition head was not something that had been discussed in dept with the other members.
As the Deputy Leader of the Opposition he was also responsible for shadowing Juliana O’Connor-Connolly, the Minister of Education, Youth, Sports, Agriculture and Lands.
The Opposition has had some issues with members settled down as former Opposition member, Kenneth Bryan left the Opposition just after four months; after initially joining forces with them. No word yet on who will be replacing Suckoo but local political analysts suspects that it will be Christopher Saunders (BTW).
CMR made contact with The Opposition Leader, Honourable Ezzard Miller and he stated that
“I accepted his resignation after meeting with him this morning to discuss the matter.”
