(CMR) A police operation began this afternoon around 1:15 pm to break up what CMR sources say is a cockfighting gang of persons in the Fairbanks Road area of George Town.
Upwards of six police vehicles and the helicopter were deployed to assist with the arrests. One suspect was observed running through some bushes but was later apprehended at the entrance of the Fairbanks community. It appears other suspects are on the loose and the area is said to be under heavy police presence and blocked off at the moment.
Sources familiar with the industry say that cock and dogfighting in Cayman is big business with many of the cocks being imported illegally by boat. The cost to acquire one can be in the range of $1,500. Special roosters that are more aggressive and bigger in size compete in rings where each fight can bring thousands of dollars and average between $3,000 – $5,000.
This is a developing story and once more information is available it will be updated.
