(CMR) Premier Alden McLaughlin continues to ignore the Cayman Port Referendum (CPR) group after it was revealed today that he has not responded to any of their five letters over the past 10 months.
The CPR group has confirmed today that they remain astonished that despite correspondence being sent to all 19 elected members, the governor and Lord Ahmad of Wimbledon (Minister for the Commonwealth; Premier McLaughlin has blatantly disregarded the group and its efforts to advocate on behalf of the people.
The CPR group has written to the Premier yet again today asking for him to clarify what the educational process will be as the petition verification reaches completion. It is anticipated that the Elections Office will reach the required numbers before the week it out.
Today's letter asks for the opportunity for people to make a “fully informed decision at the polls on the Government's cruise berthing facility”. It contends that significant information has still not been made available to the public.
The Election's Office confirmed yesterday that they had less than 60 signatures that still needed to be verified to reach the 25% referendum triggering threshold per section 70(3) of the Constitution.
With the people initiated referendum being a fait accompli CPR is asking the government to do their part to ensure that voters are educated enough on the matter to make an informed decision at the polls.
The letter provided below asks for 4 critical things including the updated environmental impact assessment of the revised design.
CMR understands that some 700 additional signatures will be left unverified once the 25% has been met.
Premier McLaughlin has used a similar tactic when dealing with the same-sex marriage issue when he ignored correspondence from Chantel Day that could have avoided the ongoing protracted legal battle.
