(CMR) Mike Adam, former CDP elected government minister for community affairs, gender and housing and more recent political candidate, appeared in court today charged with common assault.
The presiding Magistrate, Valdis Foldats, noted that disclosure papers were given to Adam's defense attorney, Waide DaCosta. DaCosta informed that court that his client was pleading not guilty and a trial date has been set for March 13, 2018.
The allegations are that on June 27, 2017, at King Road in West Bay, he assaulted a named male. No other details of the case were specified in the charge and none was referred to in court.
The DPP's attorney noted that the Crown had listed five witnesses, including the defendant and his wife. “It’s incredible that they would call my client as a witness against himself,” Mr. DaCosta commented.
Before his involvement in politics Adam enjoyed a well respected 35-year career at Cayman Airways, the national airline before retiring in 2006.
He ran for public office in 2009 and won a seat as the second elected member for George Town and became minister of minister for community affairs, gender and housing.
Adam is very active in the community, and received Queen’s Honour in 2005, not only for his selfless contribution to Cayman’s recovery after Hurricane Ivan, but also in recognition of his service and dedication to the Cayman Islands. He had two other unsuccessful attempts including in the 2017 general election where he ran for George Town South.
