Reports are coming in that a man attempted to abduct a child last night in West Bay. She managed to ward him off and call for help.
Reports from the Royal Cayman Islands Police Service (RCIPS) are that the incident, which took place at around 4:00 pm, occurred in the vicinity of Up The Hill Road which is close to The Shores in West Bay.
One resident spoke to CMR and said:
“This is considered a very nice area and on the outskirts of multi-million dollar homes. The parents are professionals and we are all shocked that this has happened in our backyards! We always felt that kids could freely go outside and play without constant supervision. Now, this has certainly changed.”
According to police, a man attempted to take the 7-year-old girl from the area.
However, the child strenuously resisted and broke free from the man, who was a stranger to her, and ran until she found an adult. The child was not physically harmed in the incident.
The man is described as tall with dark brown skin and dark-coloured eyes, wearing a black hoodie and a black mask with holes for the eyes. He was also described as having long yellow fingernails.
The police are urging the public to be on the lookout for anyone fitting this description or behaving suspiciously in areas frequented by children, and to call police if seen.
Police are also urging parents and caregivers be mindful where children are at all times when playing outdoors and travelling with them to public places.
CMR sources indicate that this not the first time that such an incident has taken place in recent weeks but this has not been confirmed by the authorities. The matter remains under investigation by the police.
