(CMR) Canover Watson (47) from George Town has been arrested by investigators from the Anti-Corruption Commission (ACC) today on suspicion of committing several offenses in relation to the Cayman Islands Football Association for a second time.
The investigation has been ongoing for almost a year and has seen both Bruce Blake, former vice president and Canover Watson, former CIFA treasurer also arrested but NOT yet charged for offenses relating to CIFA matters.
Reports are that the investigation centers around several payments amounting to $1 million dollars for a loan that was handled via the organization. Following this third arrest Monday, the ACC said the Canover was taken into custody on suspicion of secret commission contrary to the Anti-Corruption Law 2008, money laundering contrary to the Proceeds of Crime Law 2008, and conspiracy to defraud contrary to Common Law.
CIFA matters have come under significant scrutiny after Jeff Webb, former president and CONCACAF head were arrested in the FIFA corruption scandal in Switzerland back in May 2015.
Canover was arrested in June of last year in relation to this matter while in prison serving his time. We understand that he has recently been on work release and allowed to spend significant time out of prison despite not serving anywhere near his 7-year sentence after being convicted in the CarePay debacle with alleged co-conspirator Jeff Webb.
Our sources indicate that he was arrested and detained for questioning on his first of parole from the CarePay matter.
