Ronald “Foots” Kynes, the 63 year old controversial Brac artist is making headlines again today when he was taken into police custody this afternoon around 2:45pm.
His artwork has caused substantial controversy on the Brac where he is not respected for his socially themed pieces. He has covered topics such as LGBT, religion and apocalyptic disasters. Kynes has repeatedly drawn the wrath of his neighbors with his sculptures, including a goat’s head on a crucifix with the number 666 on it, titled “Apocalypse Now.” He also created a 10-foot statute of a demon holding a pitchfork and skill (“Mephistopheles Throne”) – which was vandalized in 2015.
However, some Brac residents have seen them as anti-Christian and disrespectful and have petitioned the government to intervene to put an end to it. His latest work on LGBT rights has enraged even more residents and CMR understands a petition was recently submitted to the government to intervene.
He was arrested under Schedule 1 of the Criminal Procedure Code (2017 Revision) in relation to the suspected breach of Section 157(1)(a) of the Penal Code (2017 Revision), also referred to as obscene publication. The arrest was in relation to sculpture and artwork he had exhibited in public space around Cayman Brac.
Despite drawing much criticism and debate, he has been recognized in popular dive magazines worldwide, and by networks including CNN, NBC, and CBS.
