(CMR) Jamaica has just confirmed its first case of COVID-19 earlier this afternoon at a press conference. Health Minister Dr. Christopher Tufton indicated at the press conference that it was an imported case in Kingston, Jamaica.
The Jamaican female had traveled from the United Kingdom and arrived back in Jamaican last week Wednesday, March 4 and went to the public health system yesterday, where she has since been isolated. Based on her travel history and symptoms they suspected COVID-19 as a real possibility. A clinical sample was sent to the National Influenza Centre and lab results have confirmed today at approximately 11:00 am that she does have the virus.
They are now taking steps to contain the situation as much as possible as she has been quarantined and family members advised of her positive status. They have also confirmed that travel restrictions remain in place and three additional countries have now been added to their list of prohibited countries.
In closing, Minister Tufton appealed to the community to remain calm and “to implement all the advisories relating to personal hygiene, social distancing, and overall infection prevention control.”
Cayman is currently awaiting results of at least five suspected cases.
