(CMR) Cayman Marl Road sources indicate that Charles Clifford has been appointed as the new Director of the Cayman Islands Customs & Border Control Department.
This comes according to a series of internal emails sent from Mr. Clifford at around 2:38 p.m. this afternoon to Heads of Departments and Chief Officers.
This is a new Border Control Department that is an amalgamation of the Customs and Immigration departments. It was announced in March of this year that the two departments would merge with the Cayman Islands Immigration Department no longer being a standalone public sector entity.
Clifford ended a three year search for the Collector of Customs job in early July 2015.
Since taking on the post he has been seen a no-nonsense enforcer who has started cleaning out staff members and implemented several new systems in the customs department.
Mr. Clifford was previously permanent secretary in the Ministry of Tourism, later becoming minister after being elected to government as part of the People’s Progressive Movement administration between 2005 and 2009.
This is a developing story and more information will be provided shortly. We understand an announcement for the Commander & Deputy Commander of the Coast Guard will be forthcoming shortly.
