(CMR) The agency with responsibility for road works in Jamaica has blamed blocked drains for the flooding that was experienced in sections of St James on Heroes Day (October 19).
Videos of the flooding have been in heavy circulation on social media, with one clip showcasing workers at the RIU hotel walking in calf high murky waters.
According to the National Work Agency's Communications Manager, Steven Shaw, the flooding resulted from blockages to the two major drains in the area.
“The flooding was a combination of debris blocking the channels and the sheer volume of water that came down with the heavy rains that St. James would have experienced yesterday,” said Stephen Shaw.
He explained that the flooding at the RIU hotel was likely due to debris blocking the ‘Blue Diamond' drain that empties out near the hotel.
A team from the NWA are to visit parish to examine drains and sections of St James which were flooded yesterday afternoon.
