(CMR) The Office of the Children's Advocate in Jamaica has launched an investigation following a viral video, in which a child is seen smoking a cigarette and drinking what appeared to be alcohol.
Earlier this week the video began making the rounds on social media, drawing the ire of the public as adult voices could be heard in the clip encouraging the child and praising him for making the attempt.
According to the Children's Advocate Diane Gordon Harrison the office was attempting to locate the parents of the child, noting that her office had already begun to make some progress.
” We have made some headway. As you know, the Office of the Children's Advocate always take these matters very seriously, And my director of investigations, and the team, in fact went to a particular community that we think will have some answers for us,” Gordon Harrison told a local Jamaican radio station.
Gordon Harrison further said that the video was a breach of law, and that the parents could be held culpable depending on the outcome.
Since the footage was shared online, several in the society have expressed outrage, noting that the video is indicative of the social decay within the society.
” So many things wrong with this, smh,” said one Twitter user.
“Jamaica can't get any worse, if these are their parents encouraging them, we can't have a better society, ” tweeted another.
