(CMR) A 54-year-old visitor from the US who was reported missing on Monday after he went snorkeling was found dead Tuesday morning, 21 June. This is the second water-related death in less than a week; another visitor from the US died last week while snorkeling.
At about 4:00 PM yesterday, 20 June, officers responded to a report of a missing person in East End. It was reported that the man had gone out snorkeling a few hours earlier in the waters in the vicinity of the Wyndham Reef Resort, off Austin Connolly Drive, but had not been seen.
Cayman Islands Coast Guard vessels and the RCIPS helicopter were deployed to conduct searches of the water nearby, while RCIPS officers conducted searches on land and along the shoreline. In addition, members of the public assisted with the shoreline searches, while visiting members of the Royal National Lifeboat Institution assisted the Coast Guard with searches at sea and the overall coordination of search efforts.
The searches continued until just before 7:00 PM with a negative result and resumed at 5:00 AM this morning, 21 June.
Shortly before 8:00 AM this morning a man was found unresponsive on the shore off the Queen’s Highway in East End. Emergency services attended the location and he was subsequently pronounced dead. He was identified as the man, age 54 of the US, who was reported missing the previous day.
The matter is under investigation. Just last week Jimmy Burwell was pronounced dead after becoming unconscious while snorkeling.
