(CMR) Last week 911 Communications Centre received a phone call alerting the authorities that a 13-year-old child was in distress after the mother inflicted corporal punishment on her.
CMR sources indicate that the child has stolen a cell phone accessory from the Government Administration Building (GAB); after visiting the building with the relative who later “beat her”. We understand that adult works in the building and did not realize the item was taken until security personnel checked the CCTV footage and policed contacted them.
They were instructed to return the item – believed to be an iPhone wireless earbud. These earbuds retail for $169.00 online. Upon being contacted by the authorities the child was punished by receiving a beating. At some point, 911 was contacted by someone concerned about the safety of the child.
Further sources indicate that the child attempted to commit suicide as a result of the incident and the ambulance was summoned for her. She was taken to the hospital and a police report made. The condition of the child is not known at this time.
Despite having fallen out of favor in most places in the world corporal punishment in Cayman is still legal. However, parents should be reminded that should they exceed what the law sees as reasonable criminal charges can be a real possibility.
