(CMR) A nine-year-old girl was restrained using handcuffs and was pepper-sprayed by police officers in Rochester, New York, sparking a protest by Black Lives Matter supporters yesterday.
Reports are that the police officers responded to a call at the girl's home where there was “family trouble” on Friday.
Two body-camera videos released on Sunday showed officers restraining and spraying a chemical “irritant.”
The footage also showed officers scolding the girl, who was screaming for her father.
The public has been outraged at the treatment of the girl by the police.
“To see such horrific footage of the mistreatment of a little girl, no less, was simply unreal. We have to remember who we’re talking about here. This is a child. She’s in elementary school,” Senator Samra Brouk said, during a news conference.
One officer was suspended, and two officers were placed on administrative leave pending the outcome of an internal investigation, NBC New York reported.
The child was said to be suicidal and was taken to a hospital for medical treatment.
