(CMR) The Cayman Islands Regiment continues to grow, officially adding another 29 members at the Passing Out Parade for its third cohort on Sunday, 14 August. This cohort was trained recently by a team from the UK Ministry of Defence.
The Regiment now has 107 men and women, nine of whom have attended the UK Royal Military Academy at Sandhurst.
“Thank you to the UK Ministry of Defence team who came to Cayman to provide rigorous and high-quality training over the last couple of weeks. Thanks also to the UK Defence Attaché in Kingston, Lt Col Westlake, who has given us strong support and attended the Parade,” His Excellency Governor Martyn Roper said.
Mr. Roper added, “The men and women in our Regiment are motivated to help our community respond to natural disasters. They have already won hearts and minds through support in recent tropical storms and Covid.”
He further expressed that it was an extraordinary achievement to have set up a Regiment from scratch during a global pandemic.
“Thank you to Commanding Officer Lt Col Watson, his senior team, all our Regiment staff, Minister Turner, and her team in the Ministry of Home Affairs for all they have done to build up the Regiment,” Governor Roper said.
The Governor also congratulated all the new recruits, stating they are a great asset to the Cayman Islands.
“I know you will all wear your badge with pride,” he stated.
All the recruits went through an arduous 14 days of training, including physical fitness, military skills, first aid, and basic water rescue, amongst a range of other activities ahead of their passing out parade.
