(CMR) Legendary singer Tina Turner, who had a career spanning over 60 years, died at her Switzerland home at age 83 after a long illness. Turner, the Queen of Rock and Roll, was diagnosed with intestinal cancer in 2016 and had a kidney transplant in 2017.
The news was confirmed on Turner's official Facebook page. Her manager said in a statement:
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of Tina Turner. With her music and her boundless passion for life, she enchanted millions of fans around the world and inspired the stars of tomorrow. Today we say goodbye to a dear friend who leaves us all her greatest work: her music. All our heartfelt compassion goes out to her family. Tina, we will miss you dearly.”
“There will be a private funeral ceremony attended by close friends and family. Please respect the privacy of her family at this difficult time,” Turner's publicist said.
The American-Swiss singer was born Anna Mae Bullock in Nutbush, Tennessee. She won eight competitive Grammy Awards and has a star on both the Hollywood Walk of Fame and the St Louis Walk of Fame.
Her autobiography, I, Tina, was turned into the 1993 film What’s Love Got To Do With It, dramatizing her turbulent relationship with Ike Turner.
Turner wed her long-time German beau, the music executive Erwin Bach, in a Swiss civil ceremony in 2013 and has lived in Switzerland with him since 1994.
