(CMR) The Department of Environment is reminding the public to dispose of fishing lines properly following the death of a green turtle in Cayman Brac.
According to the Department, the deceased juvenile green turtle was found on the beach in Cayman Brac Thursday morning, with its flippers and neck entangled in a fishing line.
“One can only imagine how much this turtle suffered before choking or drowning to death. This could have been avoided if the fishing line had just been properly disposed of. Fishing line disposal bins are available around each island at known fishing activity locations,” the Department stated.
The public is asked to never discard fishing lines at sea or on the beach. If you find discarded fishing lines on the beach, please help protect marine life by removing them and disposing of them appropriately, the DoE advised.
DoE's fishing line disposal bin locations can be found at www.doe.ky/marine/fishing-line-disposal.
