(CMR) A seven-year-old girl was reportedly kidnapped on her way to school and brutally raped in St Mary, Jamaica, on Tuesday, 9 May. The child was found bloodied and battered under a tree nine hours after she left home for school, local media reported.
An 18-year-old man has been taken in custody in relation to the gruesome attack, which has left Fellowship Hall community members stunned.
One resident told The Jamaica Gleaner that the child recounted that her face was covered with a bag and her mouth stuffed with cloth before being taken to an abandoned building and beaten by her attacker before being sexually assaulted and left for dead.
The resident said the child was unable to talk when she was found Tuesday evening; however, on Wednesday, she spoke about her terrible ordeal.
The child reportedly left home for school, which is located behind her home. Her family became concerned when she did not return home hours after classes were dismissed. A search was then launched to find her.
Reports are that the child's attacker was part of a group that went in search of her after she was reported missing. A child who was returning home around 5 pm saw her lying under a tree.
Earlier this year, a nine-year-old girl was raped and strangled on her way home from school in Jamaica. A man who was in a relationship with the child's mother was arrested in that incident.
