(CMR) The Cayman Islands Fire Service joined firefighting services around the world to recognize International Firefighters Day, Thursday, 4 May 2023. This annual event is dedicated to acknowledging the bravery and dedication of firefighters who risk their lives every day to keep their communities safe.

The theme of this year's International Firefighters Day is “Honoring the Heroes Who Protect Us,” highlighting the unwavering commitment and bravery of firefighters as they respond to emergencies while protecting the lives and property of those they serve. Special attention is also being paid to the many hours of training and preparation that firefighters undergo to respond to emergencies effectively.

As a part of the day’s festivities, Minister for Home Affairs Honourable Sabrina Turner, MP, toured Central Fire Station to personally convey her gratitude to local fire officers for their courage to serve. After interacting with personnel, Minister Turner perused photographs that documented the evolution of the Cayman Islands Fire Service from its inception to present day.

The visit concluded Chief Fire Officer Randy Rankin presented Minister Turner with an official firefighter’s Challenge Coin, a token given to firefighters who go beyond the call of duty, to thank her for her Ministry’s dedication to the advancement of the Cayman Islands Fire Service.

While greeting the officers on duty, Minister Turner emphasized the value of a well-trained, committed fire service to the people and infrastructure of the Cayman Islands.

“Our firefighters are heroes in every sense of the word. They risk their lives daily to protect the public, and we owe them a debt of gratitude. Today, International Firefighters Day is an opportunity to show our appreciation for the bravery and dedication of our fire service. I encourage everyone to take a moment to thank a firefighter for their service and recognize the sacrifices they make to keep us safe,” she said.

Acting Chief Officer for the Ministry of Home Affairs, Michael Ebanks, also expressed his support for the Cayman Islands Fire Service and their ongoing efforts to improve public safety.

“The Cayman Islands Fire Service plays a critical role in protecting our communities from the dangers of fire and other emergencies,” he said.

“Their commitment to ongoing training, professional development, and the acquisition of modern equipment and technology ensures that they are always prepared to respond to emergencies effectively. We are proud of the work that the Fire Service does, and we thank them for their service to the Cayman Islands,” he added.

In his personal charge to the officers under his leadership, Chief Fire Officer Rankin applauded the Service for their diligence in acquiring the skills necessary to perform their roles while displaying integrity that cannot be taught.

“Our firefighters demonstrate tremendous courage and dedication in their work every day. Today, we take the opportunity to recognize their selflessness and dedication to serving our community. We are proud of our team, across all three islands, who put their lives on the line to keep our community safe,” he expressed.
