(CMR) The Department of Environmental Health (DEH) is reminding residents to prepare their bulk waste as the annual collection begins on Monday, May 1, 2023, in the West Bay District.

“Over the next four weeks, the DEH collection crew will be out in full force collecting hundreds of tons of bulk waste. We need your cooperation to make this exercise a successful one, as there will not be any extension, and this exercise replace the traditional November schedule. Let’s work together to keep the Cayman Islands clean while preparing for the Hurricane Season”, explained DEH Director Richard Simms.

Bulk Waste Collection will take place from Monday to Saturday according to the following schedule:

 In Grand Cayman:

  • West Bay                              May 1-6
  • George Town                      May 8-13
  • Bodden Town                     May 15-20
  • North Side / East End        May 22-27

 In Cayman Brac:

  •  East Side                              May 22-23
  • West Side                             May 24-25
  •  South Side                           May 26

 In Little Cayman:

  • All locations                    May 24

Residents are urged to prepare and separate their items ahead of the week assigned for collection in their respective areas. Any bulk waste that is put out after the announced dates will not be collected.

Household appliances, furniture, and other items too large to be handled by the weekly DEH collection crews should be placed by the roadside, which is easily accessible to DEH collection crews. Metals and vegetation should also be separated from other bulk items.

Residential garbage should, however, be stored in sturdy garbage containers before its collection. Garbage will be collected in accordance with to DEH weekly residential schedule.

Persons are required to make alternative arrangements to transport to the nearest landfill any construction and demolition debris, hazardous material, electronics, and tires, as these items will not be collected during the bulk waste removal activity.

The George Town Landfill operates from 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on weekdays until 1:00 p.m. on Saturdays and is closed on Sundays. The landfill drop-off facility at the gate will remain accessible to the public and small vehicles 24 hours per day.

For additional information, please get in touch with the DEH at 949-6696, email us at [email protected], visit the DEH’s website at www.gov.ky/deh/ or message our Facebook page at https://bit.ly/3LEK55q.
