(CMR) The RCIPS says an investigation into the unexplained death of baby Alissady Powell is still open and ongoing as the police are trying to establish all of the facts surrounding the circumstances of her tragic death.
The police made this statement after Yvane Dixon Powell, the mother of the child, said her daughter was murdered and the police were not doing enough to investigate her child's death.
In response to a query from CMR regarding the investigation, a senior officer said, “The RCIPS acknowledges that this is a particularly difficult time for Ms. Dixon. I can confirm that Ms. Dixon has not provided any information to RCIPS to confirm that the death of the infant child occurred in criminal circumstances.”
The senior officer said if any such information is brought to the police's attention, the RCIPS will seek to formally interview Ms. Dixon to obtain any evidence that she might have to assist their investigations.
“As it stands now, our file is almost complete and will be submitted to the Coroner for review and Inquest. If any new evidence comes to light, the Coroner will be advised accordingly.
The RCIPS said it has been in dialogue with the mother and other members of the family and has recently informed them of certain findings of independent forensic submissions.
“We are aware of the mother’s commissioning of a private forensic provider, as she is entitled to do. We will continually review all material and information provided to us,” the RCIPS said.
However, the police said with the matter still an open file with both the Coroner’s Office and the RCIPS, they cannot comment on any findings or views.
“The matter will be resolved in the Courts, and the RCIPS will not engage in any public review, which may impact the investigative and legal process,” the police said.
