(CMR) Alvin Shaquille Ebanks, one of two men accused of committing an armed robbery at the Hell Esso Service Station last December, was found guilty on Friday, 17 March. Ebanks was found guilty on one count of robbery and one count of possession of an imitation firearm.
Ebanks denied robbing the business; however, he was tied to the robbery through DNA recovered from partially burnt clothes which matched the description of the clothes one of the robbers was wearing.
After just over two hours of deliberating, the jury returned a guilty verdict. His accomplice was never identified.
Ebanks and the other man, both wearing masks, were seen on CCTV entering the service station after 8 pm December 5, when a customer was buzzed in through the electronic doors. Ebanks then proceeded to the cashier and demanded cash.
A struggle then ensued between them, and Ebanks struck the worker with what was later determined to be an imitation firearm, causing a minor injury. Both men left the location with a quantity of cash in a vehicle that was reported stolen earlier that day.
Later that evening, a grey Honda Civic used in the robbery was found set on fire at an address on Hetties Lane in West Bay.
The court heard that Ebanks, who was out on bail in another matter, was able to commit the robbery undetected while fitted with an electronic monitoring device because he used aluminum foil to disrupt the tracking system.
Ebanks was remanded into custody as he awaits sentencing.
