(CMR) A man riding an electric bicycle was killed in a collision early Wednesday morning, 8 March, while the driver of a Jeep Cherokee involved in the crash was arrested after his breath tested positive for alcohol.
The police have not identified the deceased, but CMR has been informed he is Abele Hivett, who reportedly moved to the Cayman Islands from Italy recently.
According to close friends of Hivett, it was his dream to open a coffee shop here in the Cayman Islands. He reportedly moved to Cayman in search of a better life after losing both his parents. He has no family on island.
Hivett was reportedly living in London when his parents passed and wanted a fresh start, so he took up employment in the Cayman Islands. He worked as a waiter at Tillies from November 2022 until his death.
Reports are that shortly before 1 am, officers responded to a report of a fatal collision on West Bay Road in the vicinity of the Queen’s Court Plaza, involving a Jeep Cherokee and an electric bicycle. The Jeep and bicycle collided, and the driver of the Jeep left the scene. The Jeep was later found parked further north along West Bay Road.
Emergency services attended the location, and the cyclist was transported to the Cayman Islands Hospital via ambulance, where he was subsequently pronounced dead.
Officers later located the driver of the Jeep, a man, age 36, of West Bay. He was breath-tested with a positive result and subsequently arrested. He remains in custody as investigations continue.
