(CMR) Jordan Crooks made history on Wednesday, 15 February, at the SEC Championships by becoming the 2nd man in history to break the 18-second barrier in the 50-yard freestyle.
Just one day earlier, the world champion recorded the fastest-ever 50-yard butterfly relay split of all time with 18.90.
After clocking an 18.2 in prelims and 18.4 leading off Tennessee’s 200 free relay, Crooks said he had felt a little disconnected in both swims, emphasizing that he needed clean a few details up, according to Swim Swam. Then in his 3rd 50 of the day, the sophomore defended his SEC title in the 50 free and made history, becoming the youngest man ever to touch the 17 territory.
That swim crushed the meet record of 18.23 by former Gator and reigning Olympic Gold medallist in the 50-meter freestyle American Caeleb Dressel. In fact, no swimmer has been that fast since 2018, when Dressel registered times of 17.81 and 17.63.
