(CMR) A man who was arrested in a drug smuggling operation in Jamaica is reportedly in custody in the Cayman Islands after absconding bail in Jamaica.
According to a Jamaica Observer report, Lloyd Bennett fled the island after he and two other men were arrested and charged. They were arrested after a vessel they were traveling in was intercepted by the Jamaica Defence Force Coast Guard on September 21, 2021, off the coast of Manchester, and 1,680 pounds of ganja was seized in 38 knitted bags.
On Wednesday, the boat captain Richard Lindo was fined over J$2 million in the Manchester Parish Court for smuggling ganja. Lindo pleaded guilty on September 22 of this year to possession, dealing and trafficking ganja.
Bennett and Kayega James, the other occupants of the boat, absconded bail. Bennett had previously pleaded guilty and should have appeared on Wednesday for sentencing, but his lawyer told the court on Wednesday that he had information that he was in custody in the Cayman Islands, the Observer reported.
Meanwhile, the person who stood as surety for Bennett was taken into custody before being offered bail.
