(CMR) A 16-year-old girl was stabbed to death by her 17-year-old schoolmate during a fight at a Jamaican high school on Thursday, 29 September. Dead is grade 11 student Michion Campbell, who was reportedly from the Kingston 2 area.
The student who did the stabbing is in police custody. Reports are that sometime after 2 pm Thursday, the girls had a disagreement that became physical.
Campbell was reportedly stabbed to the left side of her neck and left side of her forehead. The other student received injuries to her left wrist. Both girls were taken to the Kingston Public Hospital, where Campbell succumbed to her injuries and was pronounced dead. The other student was treated and released into the custody of the police.
On Friday, students and teachers cried openly as they tried to come to terms with the gruesome murder that occurred a day earlier.
“Her eyes were rolling over, is the first I ever saw something like this. The girl was stabbing her like she didn't know what she was doing. She was just stabbing her. I felt like it was me getting stabbed. Children were screaming and fainting. One of them had an asthma attack,” a student recalled to local media.
Minister of Education Fayval Williams has since condemned the gruesome murder that was caught on camera.
“We must learn to resolve our issues without resorting to violence…It's not that we are ever going to do away with conflicts. What we want to learn is how we manage our conflicts. How we de-escalate conflicts, how we get out of conflicts, how we not become a part of conflicts to a point where you have violence and death,” Williams said.
