(CMR) Residents in Prospect who do not have insurance or are underinsured will soon have access to cancer screening in the community. Minister of Health and Member of Parliament for Prospect Constituency Sabrina Turner announced last week that she was partnering with Health City Cayman Islands to bring health services to constituencies.
“I'm all about preventative care. We can no longer sit by where people feel less because they do not have the funds to go to the doctor or they do not have insurance,” Miss Turner said at a Prospect constituency meeting last week.
“I've partnered with a healthcare facility who is willing to bring a doctor into the constituency once a month that will be free of charge to you the people,” she told her constituents.
She said people should have access to quality healthcare regardless of their financial or social status.
“They will be available to make sure that everybody has access to some sort of healthcare because we don't want you to be showing up when you only have seven days to live, two months to live,” she said.
Health City representative at the meeting, Ben Meade, Marketing & Communications Manager, explained that the organization would be doing cancer screening free of cost over several months.
“For us, we are focusing on cancer screenings for the community…We will have comprehensive cancer s,screening and we are going to be doing this over several months, but we want to introduce this concept to you that if you don't have any insurance or if you are underinsured– because we know there are people like that in the community– you can have access to cancer screenings that are free,” he said.
Mr. Meade explained that the screenings are diagnostic so people can get the necessary care.
“Our hope is that we are able to identify patients who will require the care and have access to the care…These screenings come at no cost because a healthy community is what we are looking for,” he added.
Mr. Meade pointed out that the largest percentage of cancer among women is breast cancer, while prostate cancer is the leading cancer among men in Cayman.
