(CMR) The prosecution in Jamaica's Home Circuit Court is to seek the death penalty for a man charged in the killing of a mother and her four children in Clarendon last week. Rushane Barnett (23) was given notice that the death penalty would be sought when he appeared in court on Tuesday.
The bodies of Kemesha Wright (31) and her four children, Kimanda Smith (15), Sharalee Smith (12), Rafaella Smith (5), and 23-month-old Kishawn Henry Jr, were discovered inside their home with chop wounds and their throats slashed last week Tuesday.
A statement from the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions explained that under the provisions of the Offences Against the Person Act, the death penalty would not be imposed unless prior notice is given to the accused person before the trial.
The court ordered that Barnett undergo a psychiatric evaluation and return to court on July 22.
