(CMR) A GoFundMe fundraiser has been set up to assist Caymanian Josephine Medina with medical expenses as she takes on a fight against cervical cancer.
Medina was diagnosed with stage 3c adenocarcinoma cervical cancer last month after a pap smear she did in March came back abnormal.
“On April 12th, a Biopsy was taken, and on May 5th I got the life-shattering results that it was cancerous. Further testing was done to confirm the progression and type. Doctors confirmed that it was at stage 3c adenocarcinoma cervical cancer,” she shared.
With cancer at this stage, Medina needs to do chemotherapy and radiation before surgery can be considered.
She expects to start rigorous treatment next week at the Cleveland Clinic, where doctors have advised her that the first course of treatment will take eight weeks. Medina said most of her insurance was absorbed by all the pre-testing here in Cayman, forcing her to apply to NAU so she could get some help from CINCO.
“CINICO approved me for assistance, but again it doesn't cover all costs; we will have to pay partial hotel, additional testing, special meals, and transportation (the hospital does have a Shuttle, but it's sometimes late, so I have to take the Uber to my appointments). In addition, we still have the usual bills in Cayman that need to get paid,” Medina, an employee of Cayman Airways, explained.
“Though the final outcome was not what we wanted to hear, we are trying to keep positive and we are strong believers that God can and will heal me 100%. If you cannot donate I ask for prayers of favor and healing,” she added.
Even as she goes through this challenging time in her life, Medina is encouraging women to get their Pap smear done.
“My message is for all young and old to please get their yearly pap done. If you don't feel comfortable with a male, please find a female doctor. My last pap wasn't before my baby boy, and he's now 6,” she said.
