(CMR) DeAnthony Russell (24) was sentenced on Thursday to three years in jail for indecent assault after a jury found him guilty of rubbing his penis on the bottom of an eight-year-old girl as she visited relatives at a residence he was staying at in 2020.
At his November 2021 trial, the George Town man denied the allegations and claimed the child was lying. However, a jury did not believe his version of events and convicted him.
The disturbing details were that the child was playing outside with her cousins and sisters when she went inside the kitchen to throw trash in a bin. Russell reportedly followed the child inside and rubbed his hands on her buttocks. He then took out his penis and rubbed it up against the child before she ran from the kitchen.
The matter was reported to the police after the girl told her cousins and sisters, who told their mothers.
In handing down the sentence last week, Justice Marva McDonald-Bishop said it was a serious offense and that she had taken into account Russell’s circumstances, which included his mental health problems. He has reportedly had schizophrenia since 2014.
Russell, who is currently serving time for a different offense, has a long rap sheet, including drug offenses, but has no previous convictions for sexual crimes. A social inquiry report found he was at medium risk for reoffending sexual offenses.
The judge granted a sexual harm prevention order which prevents him from spending unsupervised time with young girls after being released from jail.
