(CMR) A kayaker who was seen Monday evening some distance from shore was not in any distress and has not been reported missing, Commandant of the Cayman Islands Coast Guard (CICG) Robert Scotland has said.
CICG, assisted by X-Ray I and a private vessel, searched Monday evening after it was reported that a kayaker was seen 23 miles from shore about 6:45 pm. However, there appeared to have been a misunderstanding in a message sent with the distance being 2 to 3 miles from shore.
Mr. Scotland explained that following extensive search activity last night, the person who made the initial report to the RCIPS was spoken to and it was established that at no time did the person in the kayak appear to be in difficulty or distress.
The person who made the report stated that the reason for calling the police was that they felt the person on the Kayak was out too far and that it was getting dark, and they thought that someone should go and speak with the person in the kayak.
Following an appeal for persons who may have seen any person Kayaking yesterday around 6:45 pm, a member of the community advised the CICG that while in the vicinity of Cayman Reef Resort, they observed a person operating a Kayak paddling towards George Town. This person did not appear to be in any distress and was said to be paddling quite strongly.
“Based on the description provided, we are certain that the person seen by Villas of Galleon and the one later seen by Cayman Reef Resort is the same person and that we do not have a missing kayaker as first reported,” Mr. Scotland said.
He said this is supported by the fact that we have no missing person reports filed since yesterday, although the CICG has made numerous appeals for friends or family to come forward in the event they are unable to locate a friend or family member since 6:45 pm yesterday.
