(CMR) Five men were arrested following a police operation in Savannah over the weekend when a gun and several rounds of ammunition were seized. Three of the men were charged in the operation, which also saw the police seizing a quantity of drugs, including cocaine and ecstasy. Two of the men were bailed by police pending further investigations.

Rueben Hesmer Hydes (39) of George Town was formally charged with Possession of Ganja with Intent to Supply, Possession of Drug Utensils, and Possession of Criminal Property. Jason Orlando Hydes (35) of George Town was formally charged with Possession of Cocaine with Intent to Supply, Possession of Criminal Property, and Dangerous Driving.

Denver Bright (22) of West Bay was formally charged with Possession of Ganja with Intent to Supply, Possession of Drug Utensils, Possession of Criminal Property, and Possession of Ecstasy with intent to supply.

The three men who were charged appeared in court on Monday and were bailed to return on 28 March.

Bright and the two other men, both 27 years old, were also arrested on suspicion of possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Police reports are just after 7 a.m on Saturday, 12 March, police were dispatched by the 9-1-1 Communications Centre to Destiny Drive in Savannah, where it was reported that explosive sounds were heard in the area. After a brief search in the area, the officers from the Firearm Response Unit came across several vehicles and men who ran in nearby bushes. In an attempt to drive away from the location, one of the men crashed his vehicle and made his escape on foot along Jayson Avenue, Savannah, towards Shamrock Road. Officers subsequently located three men, who were detained as the officers investigated the report.

Officers carried out a further search of the area and the vehicles at the location, during which they recovered a firearm magazine containing several rounds of ammunition, as well as a loaded handgun. Additionally, drugs along with drug paraphernalia were recovered during the searches.

The fourth man, who has been identified as Bright, was later arrested. Police said a fifth man, age 35 of George Town,  attended the Cayman Islands Detention Centre, where he was also arrested on suspicion of possession of an unlicensed firearm, possession of cocaine with intent to supply, and possession of cocaine.

The K-9 Unit, Air Operations Unit, and officers from the Uniform Branch also assisted with this incident.
