(CMR)The United Nations General Assembly on Wednesday overwhelmingly voted to reprimand Russia over its invasion of Ukraine and demanded that Moscow stop fighting and withdraw its military forces.

The resolution, supported by 141 of the assembly's 193 members, aims to diplomatically isolate Russia at the world body.

Thirty-five members, including China, abstained, and five countries, including Russia, Syria and Belarus, voted against the resolution.

The vote comes amid a surge in the number of refugees fleeing Ukraine as Russia continues to launch attacks across the country. An initial estimate is that the humanitarian effort within the country will cost more than $1 billion.

However, NRP reported that none of the diplomatic activities appeared to slow Russia's attacks Wednesday morning, as said Russian airstrikes had hit a regional police headquarters in Kharkiv, injuring three people.

The resolution “demands that the Russian Federation immediately, completely, and unconditionally withdraw all of its military forces from the territory of Ukraine within its internationally recognized borders.”

It also expresses “grave concern at reports of attacks on civilian facilities such as residences, schools, and hospitals, and of civilian casualties, including women, older persons, persons with disabilities, and children.”

United Nations Linda Thomas-Greenfield told the General Assembly, “This is an extraordinary moment. Now, at more than any other point in recent history, the United Nations is being challenged.”

“Vote yes if you believe UN member states – including your own – have a right to sovereignty and territorial integrity. Vote yes if you believe Russia should be held to account for its actions,” she pleaded.
