(CMR) Justice Cheryll Richards handed down sentences in Grand Court on Monday for shoplifters Whitney Powell, Drakenburg Levy and Jessica Ebanks for stealing from the several stores in Camana Bay. They were spared jail but given community based sentences including community service orders.
The three thieves attempted to taken on a brazen act and stole over $1,500 in high end merchandise after entering the store and working in unison to distract the retail staff. They were caught on CCTV footage roaming around the complex wandering in and out of various stores for four hours. They could be seen shoving clothing into their bags and leaving without payment.
They had initially denied the allegations and even made a complaint against CMR for reporting the matter. That complaint led to the arrest of the last person in the case who had eluded police until that point.
Two of the three were convicted in October 2021 a year after they went into the Polo and NKY stores in Camana Bay to steal clothing. The third shoplifted, Jessica Ebanks, plead guilty to the offense.
Whitney Powell (20) was convicted of conspiracy to commit theft. She was placed on a probation order for 24 months and must also complete 120 hours of community service. She has to pay compensation in the amount of $616 or face four months imprisonment.
Drakenburg Levy (20) was also convicted of conspiracy to commit theft and was placed on probation for 18 months along with 120 hours of community service. He must also pay $616 in compensation or face four months imprisonment.
Jessica Ebanks plead guilty to conspiracy to commit theft and was given three months imprisonment suspended for two year. She must also pay compensation of $616 or face four months imprisonment. Ebanks has upwards of eight convictions for theft and was on bail at the time of this offense.
Both women work at different grocery stores on islands as cashiers.
