(CMR) A 20-year-old man in Montego Bay, St. James, Jamaica was shot and killed early Tuesday morning by a security guard after he attempted to rob a Scotiabank located at Sam Sharpe Square. Unemployed Dwight Anglin attempted to rob the centrally located bank and was shot once in the upper body after he refused to comply with a request to release his weapon.

The unidentified man, armed with a knife, forced his way into the bank around 8:45 am shortly before it was opened for customers. He then jumped across the counter, held the knife to a teller's neck and demanded money. An employee triggered the bank's security alarm which alerted the security company who arrived promptly on the scene. Bank security guards attempted to encourage him to end the matter peacefully but eyewitness accounts said he refused to comply.

Video footage received from the incident shows the elation of people in the bank after the robber was taken down by a single gunshot. A woman, who is believed to be the bank teller that was being held hostage, was also overheard crying and screaming repeatedly during the commotion, “thank you, thank you, thank you Jesus”. As the injured man lied on the ground wearing a red shirt and jean shorts a man in the background said, “he's not dead man”.

Reports are that as he attempted to escape on foot through the bank's entrance he was cornered and ran back inside where he was chased by security and subsequently shot. He was then taken to Cornwall Regional Hospital for treatment where he died.

Police later indicated they recovered a bag belonging to the would-be robber that contained clothing and two knives from the scene. Police divulged to Jamaican media that he was a person of interest in several community robberies including a supermarket, the knifepoint robbery of members of the Chinese community and the wounding of two foreign nationals during a robbery on Harbor Street on December 20. The bank will be closed for the remainder of the week.
