(CMR) A long serving driver at the Cayman Islands Port Authority was injured on Sunday evening when an RTG crane lifted his vehicle about nine feet in the air and dropped it at the Portland Road location off Sound Road. He was in the vehicle at the time of the incident and miraculously avoided any serious injuries.
CMR sources indicate that the incident happened on Monday evening and the injured man was then taken to Health City by private car. It is unknown why an ambulance was not called to transport him. However, he was kept for observation for a day and then released with minor injuries.
CMR understands that management at the port had requested a safety audit recently and that is still ongoing but it had not yet included the equipment involved in this incident. It is believed this may not have been caused by human error but likely a mechanical issue.
The investigation continues.
