(CMR) Derrin Kennedy Ebanks (32) was sentenced to 3 years and 8 months in jail for terrorizing and assaulting multiple people in a single night in September 2020 after his social inquiry report (SIR) concluded he was not remorseful and was likely to re-offend. Justice Richards had him remanded immediately to the cells for transportation to Northward prison.
Ebanks was convicted of the vicious assault of multiple people on September 6, 2020 after he first attacked a male acquaintance early in the evening at Coral Beach Bar. Onlookers had to intervene and stop the assault against that victim. That did not stop Ebanks from then going to the home of a woman known to him and attacking her and her friend when he was asked to leave.
They were punched in the face, head, bodies and even kicked by Ebanks. He threw the homeowner on a glass table and kicked her in her face. This vicious assault left them bruised, battered and traumatized took place in front of a young child. One victim suffered a broken nose.
He proceeded to then go onto a fourth victim where he strangled and broke her glasses whilst keeping her confined the entire night where he continually terrorized her. He refused to allow her to put on her contacts so she could see and assaulted her by biting her nose until it bled inside, strangled her and pulled her hair whilst also ripping her nipples.
It was at this residence that he then assaulted a small puppy as well by kicking it multiple times, throwing it against a wall and swinging it by one leg.
He was found guilty in August on 9 out of 11 charges by a jury and had been on bail for over five months on an ankle bracelet – he was subsequently given a reduction in his sentence for that. Justice noted that his actions were deserving of a jail sentence. For the offense of wrongful confinement, his sentence was to run consecutive.
The judge found that there were more aggravating factors than mitigating ones including the time of the offense, the various locations, his abuse of a position of trust and the fact that he assaulted the woman in front of a minor child.
This was not the first call out for Ebanks for domestic violence reports. The judge also issued a protective order for one of the women.
One victim spoke to CMR and shared that they were glad that his horrific ordeal was finally behind them. Others had shared that they remained fearful of their lives and wanted to leave the jurisdiction.
Ebanks is set to appear in court next week on December 10 for another wounding charge against a woman.
