(CMR) The United States Center for Disease Control has raised the COVID-19 travel alert for the Cayman Islands to Level 3 “high level” out of four possible levels on Monday following several days of record-high community cases reported by Public Health.
The warning comes as Cayman prepares to re-open its borders to a Level 4 status which welcomes vaccinated visitors back to the island without the need to quarantine. Several American airlines will be reinstating their travel routes to the jurisdiction.
The alert warns US citizens to ensure that they are fully vaccinated before traveling to the Cayman Islands and that nonvaccinated travelers should avoid coming to the jurisdiction. It also notes that because of the current situation in the Cayman Islands, all travelers may be at risk for getting and spreading COVID-19 variants.
Despite this downgraded status Cayman still remains on the less crowded Level 3 list compared to most of the Caribbean region. Other regional Level 3 countries include Honduras, Turks and Caicos, Anguilla, Dominican Republic, Panama and Trinidad and Tobago.
However, most of the Caribbean is at the more serious level Level 4 including Jamaica, Cuba, Costa Rica, Bahamas, Bermuda, Haiti, Dominica, Antigua and Barbuda, Barbados, Saint Lucia, Saint Kitts and Nevis, Suriname, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines and Belize.
The CDC recommends that people not travel to a Level 4 country.
